Mission, Vision and Values Statements

Mission Statement

Iowa COMPASS is Iowa's leading source of information on disability services and assistive technology.

Vision Statement

Iowa COMPASS will be the first contact for disability and assistive technology solutions. Iowans trust Iowa COMPASS to help them find answers to make well-informed decisions.

Values Statement

We deliver exceptional service to Iowans with disabilities, their families, service providers and our funders by providing accurate, useful and accessible information. We participate as a collaborative partner in the complex disability service system. We support our expertise through continuous staff training and networking. We show respect to our consumers and our colleagues with honesty and empathy.

What is Information and Referral?

Information and Referral means connecting people with resources. We maintain information in our resource database about programs and services related to Iowans with disabilities and their families, friends and service providers.

Call or email us to access this free service. Most of the information we use to provide the service is also available to the general public under "Search for Resources" on our website. Assistive technology product information is not available online; it can be received only by contacting Iowa COMPASS.

What is the Used Equipment Referral Service?

The Used Equipment Referral Service, also known as "UERS," is a free assistive technology listing service. We connect buyers and sellers of assistive technology. To post an item, call toll free or send an email through our system. Click on "Buy or Sell Adapted Equipment" to check it out. Please note that we cannot list equipment such as ventilators, nebulizers, oxygen equipment, or CPAP supplies and equipment.

What is the Assistive Technology Legal Project?

The Assistive Technology Legal Project helps resolve funding questions and provides free legal advocacy services for people who run into problems getting assistive technology.

Project lawyers may represent you in many different types of cases, including but not limited to:

  • Denials of claims for assistive technology by Medicare Part B, Medicaid or private insurance
  • Dual eligibility issues for people who are on both Medicaid and Medicare

Call toll free or email for more information.

What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive technology is any equipment or device that is designed to help people with disabilities or physical limitations to be independent. It can be anything from a simple, low-tech device such as a magnifying glass, to a complex, high-tech device, such as a computerized communication system. It can be big, such as an automated van lift for a wheelchair, or small, such as a pen gripper.

What can I expect when I contact Iowa COMPASS?

When you contact Iowa COMPASS, you will be connected with an Information Specialist who will talk to you about your disability-related needs and then connect you with information and resources and problem-solve with you in order to meet those needs. You may contact Iowa COMPASS by phone (toll free), by email, in person, by fax and by mail, although the majority of our contacts are by phone and email. If you reach the answering machine when calling, please leave a message and an Information Specialist will return your call as soon as possible. All contact with Iowa COMPASS is kept confidential (see our Confidentiality Policy).

What types of information can Iowa COMPASS provide?

We provide information related to people with disabilities and health conditions, including some information related to mental health. See our Database Inclusion Policy for a full list of programs and services about which we maintain information.

Does inclusion of information on this website mean that the agency or service has been approved by Iowa COMPASS?

No. Iowa COMPASS does not rate or endorse any agency. We provide people with a list of providers, and it is up to individuals to evaluate whether or not a particular provider will be a good fit for them.
